Week Three Assignments

Week 3 - Readings and Objectives

Reading assignments for the week:
Chapter 3 in Ethics in Information Technology.
Learning objectives for the week:
1. Identify common computer crimes.
2. Explain ways to reduce vulnerability to computer crime.
3. Categorize types of computer crime.
4. Discuss journal articles with your classmates.
5. Analyze a case study.

This week:
Week 3 is a delight for students in law enforcement. Indeed, some police departments have full-time detectives who specialize in technology. We take a close look at common computer crimes and ways to avoid becoming victims ourselves. Of course, there are many stories on crime in the popular media since crime is a perennial favorite for both reporters and readers. Those news stories might be good topics for discussion this week.
However, it is not enough to just read about crime and hope that it doesn't happen to us. Crime costs, and it is important to help our employers avoid those costs.  And, it is important to avoid those costs to ourselves as home computer users.  The old saying is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
Our discussions this week ask you to avoid being too complete in your presentation of a journal article. Last week, you analyzed a journal article rigorously. This week, you discuss journal articles with your classmates. Highlight important items of interest. Connect concepts to real world examples. Focus on particular aspects of the article which are of general interest. In other words, move your analysis to a conversational style of interaction.
Have you completed your readings for the week? If so, then you are now ready to proceed to the assignments below.

Week 3 - Chapter 3 Quiz

Read the assigned chapter this week in Ethics in Information Technology and then click on the link above to start the quiz.

The quizzes are a self-assessment and a participation grade. This means that you can take the quizzes as many times as you need in order to earn the grade you deserve. The idea is to allow you to self-test your reading comprehension.

Please do NOT try to print the quiz since that sometimes locks it up and prevents your score from being recorded. Simply take the quiz again if you need to review your readings and improve your score.
The quiz scores will be recorded each week, so be sure to take the quizzes in the weeks they are assigned. If you get a low score, then reread the material and take the quiz again.

Week 3 Forum - Main Posting
Choose ONE of the articles which have been collected for you in Course Documents. The folder is labeled "Journal of Ethics and Information Technology Articles." For your main posting this week, include the following:
The name of the article you chose to read.
The main purpose or topic of the article.
Several main points from the article that you think might be of interest to your classmates.
Any interesting connections to our textbook and/or examples, details, or questions related to the article that you think might spark discussion amongst your classmates.
Please see the information in the Assessment area of Course Documents if you aren't sure what a good discussion posting looks like. This assignment is due in the Week 3 Forum at least two days before the end of our academic week.

Week 3 Forum - Additional Postings
Post two additional messages during the week. Typically, these messages are replies to your fellow students, or you can ask about details in the readings that puzzle you. See the assessment guide for more details if you aren't sure what a good posting looks like.
Post at least two additional messages in the Week 3 Forum before the end of our academic week.

Week 3 Homework - Case Analysis
Chapter 3 concludes with three cases. Pick one and answer the questions at the end of the case. Be sure to use terms and concepts from the chapter to support your answers. Feel free to bring in outside sources if desired, and, of course, reference any outside sources.  Please remember to summarize and analyze in your own words. No quotes are necessary unless the quotes are short and the phrases memorable.  Keep this assignment to a maximum of one page (single-spaced, with a blank line between paragraphs),
This assignment is due as a Word-compatible file via the link below by the end of our academic week.

Week 3 - Step One of Commercial
This is just a reminder that you should complete Step 1 of your commercial this week. Check the information in the Final Project area for more details. There is no deliverable for this step.  Nothing is graded this week. However, you need to pick software to make a commercial. Don't procrastinate!  Questions?  Ask via our discussion board since others might have similar questions.
There is no deliverable or grade for this step of your commercial.
